Our History

Out of a small garage in the Chicagoland area in 1948, Robert Portman – along with various members of his family – founded United Remanufacturing Co. (UREMCO) and began operations.

In 1968, it became apparent that the demand for rebuilt carburetors was growing, so UREMCO opened up its first manufacturing facility on Lawrence Ave. in Chicago.  In 1979, UREMCO outgrew its location on Lawrence Ave. and built a 33,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Schiller Park, Illinois. In December 2014, the company closed the offices and warehouse on Lawrence Ave in Chicago and moved all of those operations to the Schiller Park facility. Today, all company operations are under one roof.

The company is also known to many in the industry as United Carburetor. When it became obvious during the 1980’s that car makers were transitioning from carburetion to fuel injection, the company renamed itself United Remanufacturing to more accurately identify its core strength in fuel systems rebuilding.

UREMCO continues to operate under the same management today. Now, in its third generation, we are positioned to take on the future and continue to commit to its core traditions set forth by earlier generations. UREMCO has a vibrant marketplace for remanufactured carburetors and remanufactured fuel injectors. We list over 1000 SKUs in carburetion and over 900 SKUs in fuel injection (for domestic and import gasoline fueled automobiles and light duty trucks). All product information is available in electronic catalog format from ACTIVANT/EPICOR and WRENCHHEAD. Every item is attractively packaged with UPC barcode.

Most importantly, what distinguishes UREMCO’s carburetors from the competitors is our employee experience, loyalty and dedication. Many of our employees have been with the company for upwards to 20 years.
